How to Watch the Met Gala 2019

Reasons I love the first Monday in May: two words Met Ball.

I have dubbed The Met Gala the only red carpet I care about, and with good reason. There are very few televised events I will go out of my way to watch or anticipate enough to take up precious space on my DVR.

What is it? The Met Gala is an annual fundraising event that benefits the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in NYC. This is not your average fundraiser, it is the most decadent, luxurious event of the fashion season, tickets are said to be upwards 30K if you can buy your way in. It also stamps the opening of the new costume exhibit at the Met. The exclusivity of this event is like no other, no cameras are allowed inside, and every year we get no more than the E red carpet coverage, photos from the carpet, and a few infamous mirror selfies from celebs inside. Designers partner with attendees and create amazing couture to fit the theme every year.

When is it? Monday May 6 6 PM.

Where can I watch it? E! Entertainment will be having live coverage of the red carpet and commentary.

What’s the theme? This year’s theme is Camp. When I first heard this offhandedly about six months ago, I was confused I thought it meant like summer camp- bunkbeds, canoes, that kind of thing. But let’s admit it at caught off guard this is what everyone’s mind strays to when they hear the word “camp,” unless you’re an art major. I digress, this year’s theme is very hard to explain, and will for sure lead to some very different outfits depending on what designers and celebrities choose to interpret it by. According to the museum, Camp as a theme for this year’s Met Ball is,” inspired by Susan Sontag’s 1964 essay “Notes on Camp,” and will examine “how the elements of irony, humor, parody, pastiche, artifice, theatricality, and exaggeration are expressed in fashion.” From my understanding, it’s really out there kind of ensembles, which makes me really excited but also kind of let down because with this theme there will be zero cohesiveness possible across the board.

Who are the chairs? The Met Gala this year is chaired by Gucci creative director Alessandro Michele (Gucci is a sponsor this year), Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, Harry Styles *swoon*, Lady Gaga and Serena Williams. Lady Gaga is a great fit for this, especially with her extravagant outfits from early on in her musical career.

What are people saying about it? Buzz words surrounding this year’s theme are absurdity, humor, and exaggeration. Years previous I feel like it was possible to explain themes in one word to all the people in my life that are oblivious to the world of capital F Fashion. For example, Manus X Machina: Robots, Heavenly Bodies: Catholicism, but this year if I say Camp no one is gonna get that, nevertheless this year sounds like it will be a recipe for over the top artistry and creativity.

Who should I look out for? My favorites of Met Gala’s past, Blake Lively, Elle Fanning, the Kar-Jenner clan, Lily Collins, Lana Del Rey, Stella Maxwell, Priyanka Chopra (and hopefully Nick Jonas), Anne Hathaway, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Zendaya.

But other than that, grab your favorite snacks, and clear your schedule for Monday, May 6 at 6 PM to watch the only red carpet that matters on E!.
